Pastor Delaine's Weekly Email - February 6, 2026

Greetings!

Have you noticed that we have become a nation of impatient people? Recent research has revealed that a vast majority of us can’t handle being slowed down by yellow lights at intersections, leading to 2.5 million crashes annually. But impatience has crept into other parts of our lives as well, leading to harm in our relationships and our testimonies.

Recently I was challenged by Proverbs 16:32. It reveals God’s priority for us not to be in such a hurry and to not be so easily aggravated.

Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
Proverbs 16:32 NLT

One author pointed out that the comparisons in our verse are quite startling when we consider that patience and self-control are contrasted with safety. In a time when might and skill as a soldier were crucial to protection of one’s city or country, Solomon insisted that there were two things that were more important.

First, Solomon praised being “patient.” That word referred to being slow to get angry or frustrated. And he said it was by far more preferable to conquer our tendency to be frustrated with others and life, than to conquer our bodies and build strength. Second, Solomon praised having “self-control.” This was the ability to control one’s emotions rather than becoming aggravated and upset with life and others. He said it was far better to be able to conquer our emotions than to conquer a city.

Let’s work at being patient and self-controlled in a world that struggles with both.

Blessings!

Delaine
