Pastor Delaine's Weekly Email - December 3, 2025
Greetings! Many of us are beginning to feel the busyness of the Christmas season with programs to attend, shopping to get done, cards to send, baking to finish, parties to schedule, lights to put up and Christmas trees to decorate. It can all be quite wearying. We wish it could be different. Interestingly, so does God. Take a look at our verse for this week. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil: for he gives to his beloved sleep. Psalm127:2 ESV The Psalmist captured well the busyness of life in the first two phrases: “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest . . . .” He insisted that all the effort to climb out of bed early and return to bed late to get everything done is in “vain.” He chose a word that spoke of futility, worthlessness and a waste of time. He viewed all the energy expended as producing nothing of real value. It makes sense when we consider what all the energy was going toward: “eating the bread of anxious toil.” That phrase referred to earning a living by continuous hard labor that produced anxiety because there was never enough time for rest. But how special to be reminded that God can be a wonderful source of rest even in hectic times. Notice the last phrase of our verse: “For he gives to his beloved sleep.” As we focus on God in this season and honor Him with our time, we will find our hearts and minds are much calmer when we head to bed each night. We will have God’s promise of blessing and comfort that will allow us to sleep the sleep of the righteous. Blessings! Delaine |
